The establishment of a Communist government in China in 1949 and the North Korean invasion of South Korea in 1950 helped transform the Cold War into a global conflict. The United States would confront Communism in Iran, Guatemala, Lebanon, and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold War tensions abroad were accompanied by a second Red Scare on the home front.&nbsp; In an atmosphere charged with paranoia and anxiety, there was deep fear at home about \u201cenemies within\u201d sabotaging U.S. foreign policy and passing atomic secrets to the Soviets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#bf5700;font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.681), 22px);\"><strong>Postwar America<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.la.utexas.edu\/his-315l-external\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/07\/scene.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-678\" width=\"261\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/embed.la.utexas.edu\/his-315l-external\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/07\/scene.jpeg 668w, https:\/\/embed.la.utexas.edu\/his-315l-external\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/07\/scene-228x300.jpeg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Happy Days&#8221; scene.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the early 1970s, films like American Graffiti and television shows like \u201cHappy Days\u201d portrayed the 1950s as a carefree era\u2014a decade of tail-finned Cadillacs, collegians stuffing themselves into phone booths, and innocent tranquility and static charm. In truth, the post-World War II period was an era of intense anxiety and dynamic, creative change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 1950s, African Americans quickened the pace of the struggle for equality by challenging segregation in court. A new youth culture emerged with its own form of music\u2014rock \u2018n&#8217; roll.
